Yurtle is Dustin Henderson's pet tortoise.

History[]

1984[]

October 31[]

After Dustin discovered a strange creature in the trash can outside his house, Dustin removed Yurtle from his cage and replaced him with the creature, apologized to him by saying, "Sorry Yurtle. Temporary eviction, buddy." and christened his other pet 'D'Artagnan'.

1985[]

June 28[]

When Dustin returned home from Camp Know Where, he remarked how Yurtle was the only one happy to see him, just before his toys supposedly came to life.

Yurtle's name is likely a reference to the 1950 children's story Yertle the Turtle by author and illustrator Dr. Seuss, one of the oldest references made in the show.
Unlike in the Dr. Seuss story, Yurtle's name is spelled with a U rather than an E, as confirmed in a 2017 tweet posted by @strangerwriters.
Yurtle is portrayed by a Sulcata tortoise in Season 2 and a Russian tortoise in Season 3.
