By 1986, smuggler Yuri Ismaylov had repurposed an abandoned church in Kyrzran, Kamchatka, using it as a warehouse to house smuggled goods from the United States.

The church was acquired by Yuri sometime before 1986. He stored weapons such as flamethrowers and smuggled products such as JIF peanut butter in it.
1986[]
Labor camp prisoner Jim Hopper escaped and arrived in Yuri's warehouse while Yuri was flying his hostages Joyce Byers and Murray Bauman to the Soviet Union. Later, after Joyce and Murray kidnapped Yuri and rescued Hopper and Dmitri from the prison, they came to the warehouse. There they contacted Ellen Stinson, an agent of Hopper and Joyce's friend Dr. Sam Owens, and changed into clean clothes. While initially they had the plan to fly straight to the USA by Yuri's helicopter Katinka, Joyce, Hopper and Murray made a plan to go back to the gulag and kill the Russian Demogorgon and Demodogs, weakening an evil force from the Upside Down in their hometown Hawkins. So they took flamethrowers with them to the gulag.
