Yuri's Fish n' Fly was an establishment and business in Nome, Alaska, owned and ran by Yuri Ismaylov. Through Yuri's Fish n' Fly, Ismaylov offered plane rides over the Arctic for what he called "a good, fair price". However, this business was likely a front and base of operations for Ismaylov's true source of income: smuggling American goods into the Soviet Union.[1]
History[]
Background[]
At some point, Yuri Ismaylov opened Yuri's Fish n' Fly in Nome, Alaska, likely to store smuggled goods and to sell hostages to the Soviet Union.
1986[]
In 1986, prison guard Dmitri Antonov decided to help Jim Hopper escape Kamchatka, sending a package containing a hidden message to Hopper's friend Joyce Byers in Lenora Hills, California. The message contained a phone number, which led to her and Dmitri having a brief conversation over phone. Dmitri hurriedly told her to travel to Nome, Alaska and seek the help of intercontinental smuggler Yuri.
In Alaska, Joyce and her friend Murray Bauman met with Yuri at Yuri's Fish n' Fly. Yuri promised to take them to Russia, but also gave them drugged coffee, causing them to pass out. Yuri tied up the unconscious Joyce and Murray and put them in the back of his plane, and took off to the west. Yuri intended to hand the Americans over to the Soviets, as he knew the intelligence they possessed was potentially valuable. However, upon reaching Russia, a scuffle broke out mid-flight; Murray knocked Yuri unconscious, forcing him and Joyce to perform an emergency crash landing as they arrived in Kamchatka.
Trivia[]
A voicemail from Yuri Ismaylov was produced as part of the stealth promotional campaign from Stranger Things 4, which shed light on the character and Yuri's Fish n' Fly:
“ | Hello, this is Yuri, of 'Yuri's Fish n' Fly'. Would you like to book a trip with me and perhaps together we soar the Arctic with the fish and the polar bears? I'm sorry are you speaking, I cannot hear you because this is a pre-recorded message, you peanut brain. I got you. I got you good. I must be very busy now, perhaps with a customer. Perhaps with my beautiful Katinka. But I'm pleased to book a trip for you another time for a good, fair price. Much more fair price than [unintelligible Russian]... Just leave a number and I will call when less busy. Goodbye. | ” |
The voicemail could be heard by dialling '907-206-7700', a phone number included in mysterious packages sent to fans.[1]
