This article is about the fictional/in-universe Vietnam War. The inclusion of information specific to the real-world Vietnam War should be kept to a minimum.

The Vietnam War was a war fought in the eponymous nation. The United States had a significant role in the war, as did the Viet Cong.[1][3]

History[]

1959-1969[]

In or around 1959, an 18-year-old James Hopper Jr received an induction letter from the US Military, informing him he had been drafted into the army.[3]

In 1963, Hopper was sent to Vietnam; Joyce Maldonado bid him farewell.[2]

After arriving and seemingly testing well, Hopper was placed in the Chemical Corps. On some occasions, Jim and his compatriots would have to mix up "55-gallon drums" of Agent Orange with kitchen gloves; other times, they were exposed to the toxic gas while cleaning out buffalo turbines, "just inhaling the stuff" due to never wearing masks. Their superiors told them the chemicals weren't weapons, but little more than "harmless" herbicide.[3]

Jack Sullivan was a recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal, indicating he served in Vietnam.

1969[]

In 1969, government researcher and director of Hawkins Lab, Dr. Martin Brenner, exerted his influence to force college student Andrew Rich to fight in Vietnam. Rich was ultimately killed in the war, having never learned that his girlfriend, Terry Ives, had become pregnant with his daughter.[4]

1970s[]

After returning to "real life" in America, Jim, now a "decorated veteran", tried to "get back to normal"; he and his fellow workers started having families, but "things started going wrong" with their children.[5] Jim and his partner Diane had a baby named Sara who, despite being born perfectly healthy, later developed cancer and suffered an untimely death. In the years that followed, Hopper, knowing exposure to Agent Orange was the probable cause of Sara's cancer, blamed himself for choosing to have a child, despite being aware of the risks.[3]

1983[]

In advance of "Operation Mirkwood", Lucas Sinclair gathered various supplies, which included binoculars and an army knife from Vietnam.[6]

1986[]

In 1986, Hopper, while imprisoned in Kamchatka, divulged his history in Vietnam to his fellow inmate, Dmitri Antonov.[3]
