The country is a federal constitutional republic largely consisting of 50 states, among several other overseas territories, and was geopolitically opposed to the Soviet Union throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, with the tension between the two nations being widely referred to as the 'Cold War'.

Alaska Contains the town of Nome, home to Yuri Ismaylov and the location of Yuri's Fish n' Fly.
California San Diego, California was the home of Max Mayfield and Billy Hargrove before their move to Hawkins.[1] Additionally, Joyce, Will, Jonathan and Eleven were relocated to Lenora Hills, California in 1985.

Nevada The Nina Project facility is located in the Nevada desert. Nevada also contains the town of Ruth, where Dr. Sam Owens and his wife Cathy live.
New York Contains New York City, the former home of Jim Hopper. Also the location of New York University, or NYU, where Jonathan Byers wanted to study.
Pennsylvania Contains the city of Pittsburgh.
Tennessee Tammy Thompson moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in country music.
Utah Contains Salt Lake City, home to Suzie Bingham and her Mormon family.
