An unknown number of test subjects were subject to experimentation at Hawkins National Laboratory and other secretive government facilities throughout the mid and late twentieth century. Some of these test subjects, such as Terry Ives, were volunteers for Project MKUltra, taking part in experiments intended to expand the limits of the human mind.
After Dr. Martin Brenner discovered the existence of Henry Creel and his unusual abilities, Brenner took Henry to Hawkins Lab, where he attempted to study and control him. Brenner implanted a power suppressant chip in Henry's neck, while designating him "001", the first of a group of child test subjects to be raised at Hawkins Lab.
Hoping to recreate Henry's powers in other individuals, Brenner began a new MKUltra subprogram - codenamed "Indigo" - in which volunteer test subjects took experimental drugs while placed inside sensory deprivation tanks. Brenner secretly hoped to abduct the unborn children of the pregnant test subjects, as he believed the experimentations would make them develop similar psychokinetic abilities to Henry.[1][3]

Trivia[]
- The Duffer Brothers proposed various titles for Stranger Things, including "INDIGO", which "was gonna be" the name of the government program at Hawkins Lab.[6]
- The 'Indigo' title is not seen or heard in the actual show, though it did appear in the novel Suspicious Minds.[1]
- The test subjects introduced in the comic miniseries Stranger Things: SIX and Stranger Things: Into the Fire had their canonicity thrown into doubt when the Hawkins Lab segments of Stranger Things 4 declined to acknowledge them. This speaks to a general failure of communication and co-ordination between Netflix, the Duffer Brothers and Dark Horse Comics when it comes to keeping the Stranger Things universe consistent.
- While filming the fourth season, the actors for the child test subjects were told the children all had "some form of telekinesis", but also possessed an "extra" unique power. This generally lines up with what is presented in the show.[7]
- Ten and Eleven both possess remote viewing abilities.
- Eight can give people hallucinations, though she does not appear to be telekinetic.
- Sparrow Nicole says she asked the Duffer Brothers if Four could have a mind reading power, and the Duffers agreed that it could be canon.[7]
- Vecna, the first of the test subjects, possesses all the abilities listed above.
- Saint John from Darkness on the Edge of Town was experimented upon at the mysterious Rookwood Institute in New York, unlike all the other known test subjects.
- Another psychic test subject appears in a non-canon crossover with Far Cry 6: a Russian woman codenamed Shest'/Six, affiliated with the "Lock Project".
- The Soviet scientists in the Stranger Things: Kamchatka comics take a different approach to their American counterparts, instead focusing on psychically-controlled machinery.

Canon hierarchy[]
- ↑ Information from Stranger Things: Six, a Tier 3 source, conflicts with what's presented in the main series.
- The comic versions of the test subjects are at odds with what the fourth season depicts.
