S U R V I V E (also written as Survive) is a four piece synth band based in Austin, Texas. Two band members, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, compose the score for the Netflix series Stranger Things.
Stranger Things[]
While developing their initial concept for Stranger Things (originally entitled Montauk), the Duffer Brothers decided they wanted the show to have an entirely electronic score. When the Duffers heard tracks by S U R V I V E in Adam Wingard's film The Guest ("Hourglass" and "Omniverse" from the album Mnq026), they became instant fans of the band.[1]
The Duffers used the S U R V I V E song "Dirge" in a mock trailer made to pitch the show to TV networks and streaming services. Once the show was green-lit, the Duffers decided to contact the band around July 2015, asking if the group was still together and available to potentially score the first season. Band members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein provided the production team with dozens of unreleased tracks from the band's past. The Duffers were ecstatic after listening to the material provided, and they implored the duo to quit their day jobs to produce music for the show full-time, to which Dixon and Stein agreed.[1][2] Dixon and Stein have since scored every season of the series.
The S U R V I V E track "Dirge", first used in the mock trailer for Montauk, was later used in "The Battle of Starcourt" (during Billy's self-sacrifice to the Spider Monster). Another S U R V I V E track, "Cutthroat", appeared in "The Dive", when Eleven beats Two in the circle game.
