In early 1986, Dmitri Antonov sent a porcelain Russian doll to Joyce Byers, which she recieved on March 21. The doll contained a hidden message from Antonov, informing Joyce of Jim Hopper's survival.

At some point, Dmitri "Enzo" Antonov mailed Joyce Byers the package containing the Russian doll to inform her that he and Yuri Ismaylov were willing to work together to return Hopper to the United States for $40,000.[1]
March 21[]
Joyce received the package. After she receiving the package, she immediately called Murray Bauman, who told her to smash the doll open. She followed his instructions, smashing the doll and discovering a hidden note revealing that Jim Hopper was alive.[2]
