Veronica "Ronnie" Ecker is a character from Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus and Stranger Things x Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Hellfire. Ronnie was Eddie Munson's best friend and a drummer in his band Corroded Coffin.[1]
History[]
Background[]
Ronnie Ecker was a resident of Forest Hills Trailer Park in Hawkins, Indiana. She moved there to live with her grandmother (referred to as Granny Ecker) at the age of eight, following the death of her father and her mother being incapable of taking care of her due to mental illness.
She befriended Eddie shortly after moving to Forest Hills, while Eddie temporarily lived with his uncle, Wayne Munson, during his third grade. They stayed close even when Eddie’s dad, Al Munson, took Eddie back to their house.
When they were thirteen, Eddie tried to kiss Ronnie who rejected him. She explained later on that it wasn’t only Eddie who she didn’t like that way.
When Eddie founded Corroded Coffin for the Hawkins Junior Talent Show, Ronnie was the first recruited member. She played the drums.
Though Eddie was a target for bullies upon starting high school, Ronnie remained his friend and was there to cheer him up.[2] Ronnie later became a member of the Hellfire Club until her graduation in 1984.[1]
1984[]
During her senior year at Hawkins High, Ronnie obtained a scholarship for NYU with the intention of studying law.
Ronnie confronted Eddie when he dropped out of high school and shut down the Hellfire Club. She argued fervently in favor of Hellfire as a group in which high school outcasts could find community.
The day before Eddie planned to leave for California, he came to see Ronnie at the trailer park but she refused to see him. After Eddie re-enrolled at Hawkins High and reinstated the Hellfire Club, Ronnie accepted his apology. She then suggested Eddie to consider Gareth to fill her position as Corroded Coffin’s drummer.
Personallity[]
Ronnie was a smart, pragmatic, strong-willed teenager who was never at a loss for words. She had a strong sense of justice (she notably bit a boy on the arm when he catcalled her) and she wasn't ashamed of her humble background.
Ronnie had a rebellious spirit. She once had the cops called on her for playing her drums at eleven p.m. behind her grandmother’s place.
Relationships[]
Familial[]
Granny Ecker[]
Ronnie had a good relationship with her grandmother. Even though Granny Ecker was a strict caretaker, she always took good care of Ronnie.
Non-familial[]
Ronnie was Eddie's best friend since their childhood. She was one of the first persons to see beyond reputation attached to his family name. They bantered together a lot and Ronnie often punched Eddie's arm playfully. Ronnie regularly asked Eddie for a ride home, a routine that cemented their friendship.
She often acted as a voice of reason for Eddie and didn't hesitate to call him out when he acted poorly. Ronnie always defended Eddie when he was wrongly accused. She also tried to help him get better grades in high school.
Ronnie was also a fierce defender of the community spirit created by the Hellfire Club, especially when the members were already suffering bullying from the basketball team before joining.

Trivia[]
- Veronica’s nickname, Ronnie, is the same as the heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio. Although it was not officially claimed as a purposeful choice, it draws a link to the album cover stitched on the back of Eddie’s jean jacket, Dio’s The Last in Line.
- Ronnie is described as taller than Eddie, with brown hair and brown eyes, resulting in people often mistaking them as siblings.
- Ronnie first appears in Flight in Icarus before reappearing in the comic book miniseries The Rise of Hellfire. Ronnie may be the first character to originate from one form of Stranger Things expanded media and later reappear in another.[2]
- Although not explicitly stated, Ronnie’s ambiguous confession about her sexual preference has been interpreted as her character being part of the LGBTQ+ community. This reading is reinforced by a 2023’s article from Collider which says: “Much like Steve and Robin, Eddie once believed that Ronnie might be the girl for him, though a similar, if slightly more ambiguous confession from Ronnie puts them firmly in the platonic soulmates category.”[3]
- Throughout Flight of Icarus, Ronnie often acts as a voice of reason for Eddie, giving him the courage to just be himself.[3]
