A number of "rift soldiers" worked for Hawkins National Laboratory in 1984. These specialized soldiers were tasked with burning the Upside Down's vines and navigating the tunnels, both of which spread from the Mothergate.
The soldiers all met a grisly fate when the Mind Flayer tricked them into gathering at the hub, where they were massacred by Demodogs.[1]
