New York City is the most populous city in the United States, with an estimated population of 8,398,748. (The city had a population of 7,071,639 according to the 1980 census.)


In the spring of 1972, Jim Hopper, his wife Diane, and his daughter Sara moved from Hawkins, Indiana to New York City, as Hopper wanted a fresh start after his experiences in Vietnam. Diane worked at the elementary school that Sara attended and Hopper worked as a homicide detective for the New York Police Department. After his Sara’s death in 1979, Hopper and Diane divorced and Hopper moved back to Hawkins where he became police chief.
