Nevada was a federated state of the United States of America.
The state was notable for various reasons; it was the location of the underground missile silo which later became the Nina Project facility. Nevada was also the home of Sam and Cathy Owens, and had at least one Surfer Boy Pizza restaurant.
History[]
1950s[]
Following the USS Eldridge/"Philadelphia Experiment" incident in 1943, Dr. Martin Brenner and his staff began work on the "Nevada Experiment", an attempt to reproduce what had happened to the Eldridge in '43. The government facility that hosted the experiments was located in or around Rachel, Nevada. However, a rogue staff member defected and stole essential equipment from Brenner, hiding the equipment inside a nearby cave system.
Later, the equipment in the caves unexpectedly activated, causing the staffer and a child bypasser named Henry Creel to become trapped in Dimension X. The staff member died during the incident, but Henry survived; he encountered a version of the Mind Flayer and had to fend off strange creatures in order to survive.
Henry eventually returned home after 12 hours, but with wildly different blood, and an altered personality. Brenner later recovered the stolen equipment, also finding the dead body of the defector and a spyglass belonging to Henry.[1]
1950s - 1986[]
At some stage, an intercontintental ballistic missile (ICBM) silo was built in the Nevada desert. Some years later, the missile silo was decommissioned.
1985 - 1986[]
At some point prior to March 1986, Brenner and Dr. Sam Owens learned of the loss of Eleven's abilities and began working on the Nina Project, a scheme designed to bring her power back. Brenner and Owens repurposed the unused ICBM silo, giving it a 'facelift' and transforming the space into the Nina facility. They recruited a large team of scientists to work on the project.
1986[]
On the evening of March 22, 1986, Colonel Sullivan visited Owens at his home in Ruth, Nevada and threateningly questioned him about Eleven's whereabouts. Owens continued to deny that Eleven was alive. After Sullivan's departure, Owens realised he was rapidly running out of time to execute his plan and could delay no longer. Owens sent an encrypted message to his colleagues via his personal computer, informing them it was finally time to initiate the next stage of the Nina Project.
A few days later, Owens, after informing Eleven about the Nina Project's existence, transported her to the Nina facility. After she discovered Dr. Brenner was alive and also working on the project, Eleven fearfully and angrily attempted to flee the base, but Brenner ordered Eleven to be forcefully sedated. The technicians then placed an electrode cap on Eleven's head, injected her with serum, and placed her inside the Nina sensory deprivation tank. While inside, she was exposed to audiovisual stimuli from Hawkins National Laboratory, 1979, via the form of old CCTV tapes playing on various screens; this allowed her to 're-experience' her memories from 1979, and regain her powers in this process. After some time, Eleven's powers were seemingly restored to her previous limit.
Meanwhile, Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle tried to track down Eleven. After enlisting Suzie Bingham's help and using the IP address given to them by Agent Harmon, the group discovered she had been taken to Nevada, and set off in Argyle's Pizzamobile to find her.
After Eleven used the Void to spy on her friends in Hawkins, she grew concerned for them, and wanted to help in their fight against Vecna. However, Brenner sought to continue the Nina experiments, wanting to push Eleven's abilities beyond their previous limit. Brenner and Owens began to argue when Eleven insisted on returning to Hawkins, which provoked Brenner to forcefully incapacitate both Eleven and Owens; guards loyal to Brenner chained Owens to a rail inside the observation room, while Brenner personally sedated and collared Eleven.
Shortly after this, Lt. Colonel Sullivan launched a full-scale military attack on the facility, deploying vehicles, weaponry and a helicopter. They burst down the door to the facility with a bomb and charged inside, killing the guards. Most, if not all, of the scientists attempted to escape through a hidden escape hatch, but were all apparently shot and killed by the helicopter's sniper. After locating Owens and ignoring his pleas to spare Eleven, Sullivan ordered his men to execute her. However, Eleven used her telekinetic powers to crash the helicopter into the facility. Brenner died, while Eleven was rescued by her friends in the Pizzamobile; Sullivan and his men were seen emerging from the facility, but it is unknown what came to be of Dr. Owens.
After telling the boys about Vecna, and how their friends in Hawkins planned to fight and kill him, the group attempted to book an immediate flight back to Hawkins. However, upon realizing that physically returning to Hawkins in time to help was impossible, Eleven instead decided she would attempt to "piggyback"; it was possible she could enter Max's mind while Vecna attacked her, meaning she could fight him without having to physically be in Hawkins. The group made a makeshift sensory deprivation tank in the back of a nearby Surfer Boy Pizza restaurant, which Eleven used to project her consciousness.
