The Military Access Control Zone, also known as the MAC-Z, referred to the military occupation of Hawkins's town square during 1987. It was established to contain and combat the sustained threat of the Upside Down.
After all four of Vecna's curse gates opened in 1986, they converged and merged at the town square, destroying much of Hawkins Public Library in the process. Following the disaster, the US Military established the Military Access Control Zone in the town square and covered the curse gates in the town square and across Hawkins with steel plates. An exposed portion of a gate remained at the library, which military personnel used to travel to and from the Upside Down.
After the destruction of the Upside Down, the military cleared out of Hawkins and the MAC-Z was dismantled.

- Robin Buckley jokingly calls the MAC-Z the "Big Mac" on her Morning Squawk radio broadcasts, referencing the McDonald's-brand cheeseburgers.[1]
