Ivan, portrayed by Nikolai Nikolaeff, was a recurring antagonist in the fourth season of Stranger Things. He was a Russian prison guard stationed at Kamchatka.
History
Background
Ivan was shown to be friends with Dmitri Antonov. Soon, Jim Hopper, an American who worked against Soviet forces in the Starcourt Base in 1985 was sent to the prison camp at which he worked.
1986
On March 25, after Hopper was able to escape from the prison, peanut butter smuggler Yuri Ismaylov revealed to the warden that Dmitri was secretly trying to break Hopper out of prison, and consequently Dmitri was rendered a prisoner alongside a recaptured Hopper. Following this, Ivan started acting antagonizing towards Dmitri, although he briefly seemed to consider helping Dmitri when he was offered money.
The next night, Dmitri and Hopper are set to be sacrificed to the Russian Demogorgon. When they attempted to escape by opening the doors, Ivan prevented the guards from shooting them, saying they would need a battering ram to open the doors and let the Demogorgon devour them alive. However, they are able to outwit the creature with help from Murray Bauman and Joyce Byers when Joyce accidentally turns off the electric fence surrounding the pit when attempting to help Hopper and Dmitri escape. The enraged Demogorgon then goes on a murderous rampage, killing Ivan along with many other prisoners, guards, and the warden, Melnikov.
