An inter-dimensional environment, or "hellscape", existed between dimensions.[1][2] The environment consisted of two parallel planes of cloud and mountainous terrain, with conjoining lightning leaping from plane to plane.
History[]
On September 8, 1979, a fight broke out between Henry Creel and Eleven, following the former's massacre of the other psychokinetic child test subjects at Hawkins Lab. Eleven ultimately overpowered Creel, using her powers to pin Henry against the wall of the Rainbow Room and disintegrate his body; however, an interdimensional gate then appeared in the wall and transported Henry away, before sealing up and disappearing again.[3]
Henry was sent careening through a strange inter-dimensional environment: the Hellscape. For an indeterminate period of time, he fell between the two parallel planes; he was constantly electrocuted by lightning leaping across the twin planes. The mutilation inflicted by the lightning strikes marked the beginning of a bodily transformation; from this point on, Henry slowly morphed into a form no longer recognizable as human.[3]
Some time later, Henry exited the Hellscape and entered a parallel dimension.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
In the teleplays for "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab" and "The Piggyback", and in Michael Maher, Jr's concept art, the location is described both as a "Hellscape" and an "inter-dimensional environment".
According to Maher, the environment was meant to look otherworldly and terrifying. One of his unused concepts showed the floating tear between dimensions that Henry was sent through, and what seeing the Rainbow Room and Eleven might have looked like from Henry's perspective.[2]
A few days after the release of Stranger Things 4, Volume 1, the Hellscape scene was adjusted to give the setting a more brown-gold appearance.

Notes[]
The Hellscape is distinct from the Upside Down and "Dimension X", which are described as alternate dimensions. Though the precise relationship between the Upside Down and "Dimension X" remains to be seen, and despite Dimension X and the Hellscape being visually similar, it can be assumed that the Hellscape is indeed an inter-dimensional space, rather than an alternate dimension.
The Hellscape also bears some resemblance to Vecna's Mind Lair. The original version of the Hellscape was red, just like the Mind Lair; however, the Hellscape's colours were later changed, likely to help viewers better distinguish between the two locations.
