Hawkins High School had its own cheerleading squad. In early 1986, Chrissy Cunningham was head cheerleader.

On March 21, the squad performed at a pep rally in the Hawkins High gymnasium, in advance of the Tigers taking on the Falcons later that night. After the game, Chrissy Cunningham, the squad's head cheerleader, was murdered; Chrissy's death prompted her boyfriend and Tigers player Jason Carver to lead a manhunt against her presumed killer: Eddie Munson of the Hellfire Club.
