I'm sure your sister isn't killing people, right? But shit, I've read the wrong person plays this game, it can warp their mind. They confuse fantasy and reality, and innocent people die. I mean, it's been happening all over the country. It's like an epidemic.

And I think Eddie... He's the wrong type of person, right? You know, he got lost, he thought Chrissy was just a part of his... his sick game. And chances are, he's still in the game - but not if we can help it.
— Jason's speech

Hawkins High School had its own basketball team; the team members were informally known as "The Tigers", a nickname that also applied to the school's other sports teams.[2]

In 1986, the team captain was Jason Carver, with players including Patrick McKinney, Chance, Lucas Sinclair, Josh and Andy. The team were a social clique that sticked together in and outside of school hours; the group used an abandoned burger joint as a hang-out spot.

After the death of Jason's girlfriend Chrissy Cunningham, Jason rallied his teammates and friends together to find the killer; the group started to search for Eddie Munson and the members of his D&D group Hellfire Club, suspecting that Eddie was Chrissy's murderer.

While in hot pursuit of Eddie, Patrick McKinney met a gruesome fate at the hands of Chrissy's actual killer, a supernatural killing that Jason interpreted as a Satanic deed committed by Eddie. The group renewed their push to find Eddie and the Hellfire members; Jason even interrupted a town hall meeting, hoping to enlist the townspeople of Hawkins in their search efforts.

History[]

On March 20, 1986, the Tigers had a gruelling game against Christian Academy on the other school's turf, being down by ten points by half-time. The team's captain, Jason Carver, then apparently motivated his fellow players by imploring them to think of 'Jack', 'Melissa', 'Heather', 'Billy', their 'heroic police chief Jim Hopper', and 'every one of [their] friends who perished in that fire'. The Tigers then turned around their fortunes and won the game.

The team held a prep rally the next day, ahead of the varsity tournament's semi-final, where the Tigers were up against the Falcons from Jordan High. During the rally, Jason addressed the recent tragedies at Hawkins and reframed them as opportunities to move forward in a more positive direction, while referencing their win against Christian Academy.[3]

At the game later that night, one of the Falcons committed a foul. The injured player was removed and Lucas took his place, who made the game-winning shot at the last second; the Tigers' supporters then erupted in jubilation. Following the game's conclusion, Lucas was praised, and a portion of the team celebrated by drinking and staying the night at Benny's Burgers.

The next morning, Jason and his friends watched the news on television, through which they learned of a mysterious murder at Forest Hills Trailer Park. After the police informed Jason that the murdered victim was his girlfriend, Chrissy Cunningham, he had an emotional breakdown, before resolving to hunt down who he deeply suspected killed Chrissy: Eddie Munson, the leader of the Hellfire Club.

While Jason and his buddies attempted to track Eddie down, Lucas foiled their efforts. The team explored Reefer Rick's house to look for Eddie, with Jason and Patrick later noticing Eddie attempting to escape out on the lake. Moments later, Vecna killed Patrick in front of Jason and Eddie.

In the town hall meeting, Jason persuaded a large number of townspeople that Eddie was to blame for Patrick's death.
