The Fun Fair, also referred to as Roane County Fair, was an event held on 4 July, 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana in celebration of Independence Day.

Background
The Fun Fair was organized by Larry Kline so that the people of Hawkins would vote in his favor, following the protest at the City Hall that hurt his reputation.
1985
The carnival was inaugurated by Mayor Kline at the Hawkins Fairgrounds on the night of the 4th of July, 1985, with a musical performed by the Hawkins High Marching Band.[1] It was followed by a 4th of July fireworks display, which Karen, Ted, and Holly Wheeler saw from the top of the Ferris Wheel.
Amidst the celebration, the Mind Flayer called back his hosts, including people from the fair, to the Brimborn Steel Works to congregate into a much larger incarnation and then proceeded to the Hopper cabin, unbeknownst to the attendees.
Afterwards, Hopper, Joyce arrived to the fair alongside Murray and Alexei, in order to search for the kids. Kline spotted Hopper looking through the fair, and called Grigori for backup to hunt him down. Unfortunately, Grigori saw Alexei while looking for Hopper and shot him down with a silencer. Murray, who witnessed the shooting, went to warn Hopper that the Russians were after him. Hopper requested Joyce to go with Murray to help Alexei while he led the assassins into the "Big Top". However, Alexei succumbed to death, much to Joyce and Murray's dismay. At the Hall of Mirrors in Big Top, Hopper was able to shoot Grigori after perceiving his reflection in the mirror. Grigori survived, due to his bullet-proof vest, but was unable to catch Hopper who fled with Joyce and Murray.
