Five, portrayed by Jessica Arden Napier, was a minor character in the fourth season of Stranger Things. She was one of the known test subjects at Hawkins Lab and was one of Two's friends, alongside Three and Four, who ganged up on Eleven and hurt her with their powers as punishment for "shaming" Two during a training exercise with Dr. Brenner. She was among those killed by One on September 8, 1979.

History[]

Five was one of the very few children born with psychic powers as Martin Brenner presumably had a hand in giving their parents mental drugs in an attempt to replicate the powers of One. Five was then taken and raised in Hawkins National Laboratory where she was given her designated number. Five became one of the few test subjects with strong telekinetic powers while being told by Brenner that One did not exist, unaware One was real and working as an orderly within the lab.

1979[]

On September 6, Five was playing in the Rainbow Room before she and all the other test subject were summoned to the Main Training Room, and had to make the light bulbs light up and revolve around its center, which she saw Two excelling at.

The next day, Five was playing in the Rainbow Room and saw Brenner enter the room, and sorted herself into a row with the other children, before he said that, he had something very special planned for them, before he asked them to follow him.

She and the other children left the room with Brenner, to the training room where he said that, their exercise was simple, and to stay in their drawn circle, and if they left their circle, they'd lose, but the last person standing in their circle would be allowed to spend an extra hour of free time in the Rainbow Room. He also stated, the exercise will be approached no differently than any of their other exercises, and warned the children, if they use any raw emotion, such as fear of anger in the task, they will lose. The children had to move the subject who surpassed the last exercise, who was subject 002, out of his circle. The other children tried to move him, but he kept on defeating them. The last person to face Two, Eleven pushed to out of his circle into a wall, with enough force to make the wall crack, much to Five's astonishment. After the lesson, Five, Three and Four helped Two get his revenge on Eleven, and somehow escaped their rooms and threw and hurled Eleven across the room, who was spending her free time in the Rainbow Room. She laughed at her and mocked her injuries with the other as they were leaving the room.

On September 8, Five and the other test subjects were summoned to the Training Room by Brenner and he told them, that Eleven was attacked, yesterday, and that one or more subjects did this to her. When Two said that it must have been an "accident", it caused her to snicker softly. This caused Brenner to realize Two was responsible for injuring Eleven so he ordered an orderly put an Electroshock collar around Two's neck. Five watched Brenner angrily question Two for his actions and was horrified to see Brenner electrocuting Two as punishment for attacking Eleven.

Later, in the Rainbow Room, Five angrily glared at Eleven, causing the young girl to get scared. Hours later, Five was attacked and murdered by One after the Soteria chip that implanted into his neck was removed before he was banished into an unknown dimension by Eleven.

Personality[]

Five, much like Two and Three, was very cruel and relentless, willing to do virtually anything in order to achieve influence over those she views as a threat, or less in value, and likely to achieve other (unknown) goals. She was also seemingly very petty, as she, along with Two and Three, bullied Eleven, by flinging her across the room, as punishment for defeating Two in a training exercise, despite Five possibly losing against Two as well. She showed no empathy or compassion for Eleven, mocking her when she injured and chuckling when Two made a cruel joke about her injuries. However, Five is capable of feeling fear as she was horrified when Martin Brenner punished Two for attacking Eleven.
