• "Camazotz" has various meanings and associations:
  • "Camazotz" originates from Mayan mythology; Camazotz are bat-like spirits or demons that serve the lords of the underworld. In the Kʼicheʼ language, Camazotz means "death bat".
  • In Madeleine L'Engle's science fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time, "Camazotz" is the name of a dark planet ensnared by a malevolent presence. During the filming of Season 5, Ross Duffer posted a picture of the novel's cover on Instagram, seemingly hinting toward the novel's significance.
