- Unknown date(s): The Duffer Brothers pitch their series Montauk to Netflix; Netflix quickly agree to green-light the series.[1]
April[]
- April 21: The first season of Montauk was announced for a planned 2016 release by Netflix.[2]
- Unknown date(s): The Duffer Brothers contacted Survive "around April" to ask if they would be interested in scoring the first season, with band members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein agreeing to join the project.[3]
June[]
- Unknown date: The official Stranger Things writers' room Twitter account, @strangerwriters, was created by Caitlin Schneiderhan.[4]
- June 15: The casting of Winona Ryder as Joyce and David Harbour as a "chief of police" was announced. The series went through a creative evolution and would no longer be called Montauk.[5]
August[]
- August 20: More casting was announced: Finn Wolfhard as Mike, Millie Bobby Brown as "a mysterious character", Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas, Noah Schnapp as Will, Natalia Dyer as Nancy, and Charlie Heaton as Jonathan. It was announced that the series had a new title: Stranger Things.[6]
September[]
- September 1: Cara Buono was announced as Karen.[7]
- September 25: Filming commenced on the first season in Atlanta, Georgia.
October[]
- October 27: Matthew Modine was announced as Dr. Martin Brenner.[8]
