There’s that one interview where they said the rules changed because they won’t have to deal with the consequences of such deaths, leaving the possibilities for more major deaths. If they kill a bunch of like able characters, it’s not going to affect future viewership or future plot lines. It makes sense for a series finale. There probably will be some sort of great sacrifice. And I remember saying a similar thing about Max in between volumes 1 & 2 (why kill her after they’ve gone through the trouble of saving her in ep 5?) and we saw how that turned off. It’d be quite tragic for Will to die in the end. While I don’t think the Duffers have been aiming for a tragic, depressing end, who knows. The ending is apparently a tear-jerker.
