I don't get why no one ever talks about this. This is an amazing work or art made the AAA (American Automobile Association). More importantly, this inspired Eleven's plan and the namesake for the episode.

Suzie do you copy and the mall rats are just my comfort episodes, whenever I feel down they cheer me up so they are unusually high up.

So after Billy died, Max basically pretended to be happy around her friends and family because she didn’t want to let anybody in and also because she kinda felt like she didn’t deserve to be sad. She was probably giving a lot of energy to helping El get over Hop’s death, because El didn’t really know how to deal with it. Then at some point after the summer or during the school year she started showing signs of depression and signs that she was actually struggling. That’s when she started seeing Mrs. Kelly. Running up that hill came out August 5 1985 so she probably started listening to it at the beginning of the school year. The reason she listens to this song is probably because of the lyrics: “If I only could, i’d make a deal with God, and i’d get him to swap our places.” This refers to her wishing something would happen to her, instead of Billy (as we learned in the Piggyback). She felt a strong sense of survivor’s guilt because she didn’t save him. She felt that she could have done more to save him, but him abusing her held her back. This made her think that she was a horrible person and made her have suicidal thoughts. We also know that she broke up with Lucas and “disappeared” to everyone. However, in that face of all this, she didn’t give in to Vecna. She ran out of his lair. Why? Because in that moment, she saw her friends screaming her name, and she remembered her relationships with El and Lucas and Dustin and Mike and she found something to live for. This is the tragedy in episode nine because after having her brother die, being abused, and surviving Vecna one time, she dies. But it get worse; as El brings her back to life she falls into a coma and they don’t know if she’ll wake.

All of this is so sad. She basically my favorite character and I hope she survives 😭

So, in the final moments of the episode (or, well, the climax, I guess) when everything's going to shit and the four gates are tearing Hawkins inside out- or in this case, upside down, I guess. I didn't notice this until the second time I watched the episode, but the four gates all meet at the center of town- the Library. Now you may think, "big deal, the library is in the center of town, that's where the gates were headed." and you'd be right.

HOWEVER.

Let's retrace our steps back to Season 1, when Will gets kidnapped from Upside Down Castle Byers by Demogorgy. The Library (or at least the Upside Down counterpart) was where the Demogorgon held Will captive after capturing him.

Cue my mind being blown.

Now, this may just be a huge coincidence, and to be honest it probably is. But is it symbolic as hell? Absolutely.

Yes I said it people I actually want max to die.

I know I sound like a cruel, vicious, cold hearted person when I say something like this, but it’s just what I think will be best for her. Now max is actually one of my favorite characters since the fourth season in the second and third seasons I didn’t care for her that much but because of what’s been happening to her now I began to express my feelings for her more. Like before vol 2 I said I didn’t want her to die because there would be no point in dear billy but now that she’s in a coma severely injured and possibly blind, also brain dead and unresponsive, it’ll be rlly difficult for her to make it through her life if she’s in horrible pain and suffering so bad, and also a long time to fully recover. If she dies, she’ll no longer be in pain. And her health is very important. So yeah that’s why I want her to die please don’t come at me for being so cruel to such a beloved character
