The Flayed

Another commission by the eternally gifted @lorelei_benya! A follow up to her previous commission. Apart of my Stranger Things/Bleach crossover, Stranger Bleach!

Ichigo & Chrissy make their stand in Vecna's Mind Lair as he sends hordes of his Flayed Army at them. Consisting of Shinigami, Hollows, and Quincies (not pictured), they are twisted puppets controlled by Vecna. They stand back to back, Ichigo stands poised with Zangetsu at the ready whereas Chrissy is terrified and holds a piece of splintered wood. They brace for the oncoming horde about to rain hell on them.

What do you think would be a good anime for Stranger Things to crossover with?

My personal favorite is Bleach; the supernatural action mixed with Stranger Things supernatural mystery would be badass! I can already see Vecna leading an army of Flayed Soul Reapers, Hollows, and Quincies. Ichigo would get along well with Eleven.

After season 4, I feel like everyone forgot about Grigori. But he killed one of the most fan favorite characters ever, one of the show's icons; Alexei. He's the main reason Hopper was stuck in Russia for the entirety of season 4. He's a ruthless and despicable man whose profession is killing; he's completely robotic and emotionless. To me, he's worse than Sullivan, Brenner, Connie Frazier and Angela combined.

Next, Tom Holloway and Bruce Lowe. To me, these two were strangely compelling characters. Bruce had an infuriating personality, and Tom had an interesting balance and internal struggle; he seemed to switch personalities between his work at the Hawkins Post and with his wife and daughter.

Finally, the Flayed as a whole. I cannot tell you how effective this concept was. The Mind Flayer mass-possessing was just phenomenal, I shouldn't even have to explain.

This is Part 2 of the series of posts in which there is Stranger Things without a particular character.

Part 2: Mike Wheeler

In 1983, four years after test subject Eleven banished Henry Creel from Hawkins National Laboratory to another dimension known as the Upside Down, Dr. Martin Brenner commands Eleven to touch a creature she stumbles upon while spying upon Soviet spies in her mental space. Upon creating contact, a gate to the Upside Down is created at the lab, through which the creature, the Demogorgon, breaks into the lab. In the confusion, Eleven manages to escape the lab through a pipe, a way revealed to her by Henry. Eleven runs into Mirkwood, and eventually finds Benny's Burgers. Benny, however, is killed by Brenner's agent Connie Frazier and Eleven once again runs into the woods.

She stays there for a couple hours, wandering helplessly, until a group of people calling out "Will Byers!" stumbles upon her. They find her and take her to the Hawkins Police Department, who then transport her to the Hawkins Memorial Hospital. Eleven is incredibly confused. Finally, Dr. Brenner and his agents arrive at the hospital and take Eleven back to the lab. Dr. Brenner continues running tests on Eleven. Meanwhile, the Demogorgon rampages the town of Hawkins, killing Barbara Holland. The Demogorgon creates several gates all over Hawkins to get in and out of the Upside Down. Using these gates, Henry, now in control of the entire Upside Down, sends an army of other Demogorgons and adolescent versions of them, Demodogs, to destroy the town and kill all the civilians. Using the shadow-like leader of the Upside Down, the Mind Flayer, he possesses and melts all the military who arrive at Hawkins, who are unable to kill the Mind Flayer with their weapons. The flesh and blood of the military and other civilians become a proxy body for the Mind Flayer, and eventually, Henry reaches his goal of reshaping the world, with an incomprehensibly gargantuan Mind Flayer made of the flesh and blood of the world and an army of Demogorgons & Demodogs by his side.

Everyone remembers Billy and Alexei and even Heather, but I will always remember the Janets and the Mrs. Driscolls. They slay.

I’ve thought about this for an extremely irrationally long period of time. But I finally found the answer.

But it’s very nearly impossible and I don’t even know if it would be worth it.

So the Mind Flayer is like the ultimate force which can control everyone and cannot be materially killed, because it’s just particles.

In 1984, the particulate that left Will’s body remained dormant after the Mothergate was closed, it didn’t die. But when the same particulate was in the Spider Monster when the Russian gate closed, it died. Which means, whenever a part of the Mind Flayer is possessing something/someone in our dimension, it dies if a gate is closed.

So, if the entirety of the Mind Flayer is possessing something/some things, and all open gates are closed, the Mind Flayer will die in its entirety.

I might be wrong but this is what I came up with.

So a lot of people agree with me that the Mind Flayer might start Flaying people again in season 5. So what if the Gaping Creature is the new proxy body the Flayed will make? I mean the Spider Monster’s most iconic shot had its mouth way open so…

1. Mayor Larry Kline: It's really probable that he was released in season 4 or between season 3-4 I think since he didn't do that much just like corruption right? Anyways he was just an interesting character and he needs to be beat up again and again.

2. Kali Prasad/008: I know her episode was the worst rated in the series but it wasn't her fault, it was because the entire episode focused on her and El's relationship while exciting stuff was going on in Hawkins. Kali would be a major major ally to the OG characters against Vecna. Plus, she was referenced by 001 in season 4. I'm surprised El didn't think of contacting her for help earlier.

3. Flo: One of my favorite season 1, 2 & 3 characters. Very funny and sarcastic, kind of like a mother figure to Hopper.

4. Flaying: Flaying worked in season 3, it literally did. It would help the Mind Flayer---and so Vecna---in season 5 as well.

5. Hawkins Lab: And I don't mean in flashbacks. The thing started with Hawkins Lab. It needs to end in Hawkins Lab. It needs to end in the place which is the most emotional place to both Eleven and Vecna.

6. Brimborn Steelworks: Kind of a central setting of season 3. I mean it doesn't NEED to return but would be pretty good.

I got this idea from the Ariana Grande fandom, and essentially it's a game where you have to put a character, quote, place, etc. starting with the last letter of the previous response. So i could say Starcourt and then the next person would say The Flayed and then someone else could say Dig Dug.

I'll start:

Stranger Things

Just curious, why do y'all hate on Billy? I've seen a lot of people saying he's a bad character based on what they see in the show, however most of that time, he's flayed.

Just think about it. She's been thru sooo much. Her husband was a pretty terrible person, bob was killed in front of her eyes, she had to sacrifice hopper to save the world, her son was a part of the flayed, and she's gone thru so much. I hope some noice things happen to her in season 4 bc she's suffered a lot and I would honestly just be so happy if she was happy again.

Based on Dustin and Dart's relationship, it's possible if the demogorgons are trained from an early age and are well fed, and because we know that the Red Army has one demogorgon, they can breed more. A good comparison would be the raptors from Jurassic World.

However the problem is that the demogorgon species is still very much an instinctive predator, and if the Mind Flayer flays them, well we know what happens then. Seeing as how the Red Army unintentionally unleashed The Mind Flayer before, it would follow suit for them do something equally naive, as to breed an army of demogorons, that might escape or be used against them by the Mind Flayer.

There is only one good reason I can think of to introduce a demogoron at Kamchatka, because they are a checkov's gun for season 4, meaning that we will see them unleashed at some point in the season. It would make sense to have that take place in the final couple of episodes, which could amount to Hopper surviving Kamchatka, which is overrun with flayed or disobedient demogorons.

The Russian Demogoron/Demogorgons were undoubtedly tortured so they would be more subservient, but if they had the chance to get vengeance, they would easily take it. Maybe Hopper's escape plan involves freeing some of the demogorgons, or maybe the demogorgons free themselves, ei. Rise of the Planet of the Apes. What do you think, is this way too similar to what happened in season 2, or would this make for an interesting story in season 4?

I’ve had this theory in “the file” for some time. However, I have decided to let the fandom (of which I am a member) consider it as they will. I believe that amongst the TORRENT of 1,926 daily memes and polls (of which a number are beneficial) there are still so many other ways to view the Series that WE found worthy of committing ourselves to. I am still breathing, and therefore by my perception this fandom is still viably manifest!

Prior to Billy’s final apology to Max, while she weeps at his side, Billy’s culminating moment interacting with the incarnation of The Mind Flayer in S3:E8 “Chapter Eight: The Battle Of Starcourt” is his defiance in protecting El, his impalement, followed by a resounding scream as the shot focuses on his face and upper body darkened by blackened veins.

Stranger Things has had a number of times when The Flayed are shown screaming in similar condition, however the most prominent among them is the exorcism of Will Byers in S2:E9 “Chapter Nine: The Gate.” As El and Hop are at The Gate, and Mike and the others are setting fire to the hub, while Will is being roasted in the cabin. His veins blackened, strength enhanced and howling, Will is choking Joyce until Nancy placed the glowing hot fire poker to his skin. The shot focuses on his screaming circular mouth as The Mind Flayer in it’s Season Two smoke form exits Will’s body and crashes through the cabin door and flies into the starry night to ultimately shelter in Brimborn Steelworks.

So, how did The Mind Flayer escape and where did it go at the closing of a Season Three? The Mind Flayer escaped by, “Moving in Stereo.”

Early in the whole of the series El demonstrated her ability to transmit electromagnetic waves from the void as radio waves converted into audio such as when the man at Hawkins Lab was reading words, and when viewing the Russian prior to hearing The Demogorgon. When isolation tanks were unavailable El used electronic white noise as an aid to access The Void. In addition, and entwined with sci fi elements, I theorize that El may possess cryptochromes, and developed magnetite concentration in her ethmoid bone allowing the use of and disruption of magnetic fields.

I theorize the The Mind Flayer has similar capacity. By activating The Flayed I theorize it transmits waves to itself, such as with Will in Season Two and the magnetite (used in steel refining) solution infused Flayed of Season Three. Through this means I believe The Flayed may be activated, or called/pulled back to a given location.

As Dustin repeatedly yells into the Supercom amplified by Cerebro The Mind Flayer takes the dropped Supercom in the food court and screams back, then breaking its casing though not its functionality. The shot pulls into its broken form showing the circuit board (rather akin to the piece focused on in Terminator 2) and the working speaker.

In Season One El seemingly deatomized The Demogorgon with a high frequency, high amplitude scream causing herself to be transported into The Upside Down. In Season Two The Mind Flayer exits Will similarly though remaining in Hawkins and taking shelter in the steelworks. In Season Three I propose that as Billy screams The Mind Flayer transmits it’s incorporeal self through the Supercom combined with the duel broadcast amplification of the Soviet and Cerebro antennas to a new location. In 1985, due to the increasing transition from analog to digital technology and signal transfers I believe The Mind Flayer escaped functional (with the possible existence of other open gates about the Earth) into the networks of digital geosynchronous satellites (a sky net of sorts, playing off Terminator 2) that have been depicted along with Space Shuttles that deployed them as early as when a young El is reclining on a pillow in Mike’s basement decorated with such holding a Supercom.

Each Season in progression organisms from The Upside Down and The Mind Flayer remain closer and more potent. Please share your thoughts in the comments!
