The creature came even closer to us. Me, Joyce, Murray and Hopper backed away from the Demogorgon very slowly. "We gotta do something!" I shouted. "But what?" Murray asked, dim-wittedly as he scratched his head. Joyce and Hopper looked at Murray with an annoyed look, but they said nothing. "Well, since the Demogorgon's weakness is fire, I think I got a small trick up my sleeve." I said. "What the-!" Hopper exclaimed, before he quickly cut himself off mid-sentence. "Murray, toss me that box of matches!" I shouted. Murray tossed me the box of matches. "Eat this, you mindless monster!" I shouted at the Demogorgon. I threw the match at the entity, setting it on fire and eventually killing it. The four of us cheered and did a group hug. "Guys, you're squishing me!" I said, being squished by Joyce, Hopper and Murray. However, our victory was short-lived when we heard another strange noise. We turned around, and looked at what we saw. There were a pack of three adolescent Demogorgons, called Demodogs. They were about the size of a regular dog. They looked cute, but they were very dangerous. The leader of the pack roared an unearthly roar, signaling the other two to attack. "Now!" I shouted as the the three creatures came charging at us. We all grabbed our matches and threw it at the creatures. "Go!" I shouted. The matches lunged at the creatures, setting them ablaze, causing them to screech in pain, before dying. Murray laughed and said, "Burn, baby, burn!" We finally walked outside of get some fresh air. "Now that we've gotten THAT taken care of, we can finally come up with a plan to get outta here." Joyce said. "Remember that helicopter plan from yesterday?" I asked. "Yeah." Murray said. "I think that plan could work." I said cockily with a smirk on my face. "But what if we get shot down?" Joyce wondered, appearing concerned. "But we won't and can't get shot down or caught, JB." I said, slightly rolled my eyes. "Yeah, Joyce. All of the gaurds are dead, remember?" Hopper said. "Oh, r-right." Joyce said, flustered and embarrassed, she even blushed a bit. Suddenly, a helicopter flew in the air. "Look!" I shouted, pointing at the sky. We backed up as the helicopter landed. The propeller stopped spinning, and a foot stepped out, but who stepped out of the helicopter? Find out in Part 4, which is the last part of this series.

The four of us woke up in a strange place,
which was a Russian prison. There were prison guards walking around, watching our every single move. The lighting was very dim. And it was very wet and cold. "Where are we?" I asked. "We're in a Russian jail." Hopper said. "We need to come up with a plan to get out of here." said Joyce. "But how?" asked Murray. "Anyone got any keys?" I asked. Joyce, Hopper and Murray all shook their heads. I facepalmed, shook my head and groaned. I thought and then had an idea. "I think I have an idea. " I said. "What is it?" asked Joyce. "I have a paper clip that can help us." Hopper had a confused look on his face and asked, "How is a paper clip going to help us?" "Just watch, wait, listen and learn." I said. I unfolded the paper clip and picked the lock. We finally made it out without getting caught. "You're a genius!" said Murray. "All in a day's work." I said, winking at Murray. As we walked around, many of the gaurds were dead, and they died in very gruesome and gory ways. One of them had his stomach ripped out. And one of the gaurds was most likely eaten, only leaving behind a severed hand. But who attacked them? Or, most likely, what? Suddenly, we saw a shadow. It was taller than a human. The figure was very tall, skinny and lanky. We stepped back slowly. I looked at Joyce and said, "I'm scared." Hopper comforted me and said, "It's okay. Just stay strong." I looked at Hopper and nodded my head. The monster came closer, and it made an unearthly growl. It opened its mouth, which looked like a Venus flytrap about to trap its prey. "Run for it!" I screamed. We all ran for cover. I then hid behind Murray, Joyce and Hopper.

If Hopper jumped through the gate, he would just be in the Upside Down version of the Starcourt Base. I doubt he’d trek to Russia in the Upside Down, and even if he did, there’s a low chance there even still is a gate in Russia. The one time there was was in 1984, and that failed and immediately closed. I doubt that they created another one after they had already gathered the Russian Demogorgon and so many Demodogs from the Starcourt gate. I mean it’s not confirmed that the Russian Demogorgon and Demodogs came from the Starcourt gate but it’s pretty obvious.
Hopper, Joyce, Murray and I were wandering around Kamchatka, Russia and the four of us were all wearing our winter clothes to keep us warm and protect us from the freezing cold. Keep in mind that this was 1987, and The Cold War was still happening, and America and Russia were still having a.....bit of a disagreement with each other. A verbal disagreement, that is. Kamchatka was very cold and it was freezing. There was also snow covering almost everything, even our clothes. Plus, I tried catching the snowflakes on my tongue. We were coming up with a plan on how to escape and return to America. "So, how are we supposed to get out of here?" I asked. "Geez, I'm not sure." Hopper said. Joyce and Murray stared at him with annoyed looks on their faces. "Maybe we can sneak out of here." Joyce said. "But Kamchatka is miles away from America!" Murray exclaimed. "Maybe we can get on a helicopter and get out of here." said Hopper. "But if we get shot down?" I asked. I stared at Hopper with an annoyed look, shaking my head in disagreement. "Maybe we can.....distract the gaurds?" Murray said, shrugging and laughing nervously. Joyce rolled her eyes said sarcastically, "Really, Murray?" I whispered in Murray's ear and said, "That's totally not going to work." But he didn't seem to listen. "I'm going with Joyce's plan." I said. "Agree?" I asked. "Agree." Hopper and Murray said in unison, also while groaning and mumbling about how this wasn't going to work. "Shh! Be very quiet and very careful. Whatever you do, don't make a sound!" Joyce whispered. Hopper, Murray and I nodded in agreement. The four of us tip-toed quietly. We could hear the snow crunching beneath our feet. Suddenly, we were startled by a yell. "There!" shouted a voice. It was a Russian gaurd. We were caught! "Dammit, Joyce! I knew this plan wouldn't work!" Hopper whispered. "Well, you were the one who agreed!" Joyce whispered back. Then, we heard a gunshot. I was scared as I saw the bullet coming towards us. "Get down!" I shouted. We all ducked to avoid getting shot. This alerted three more Russian gaurds. The gaurds then threw snowballs at us. I threw snowballs at them, too. Then Hopper, Joyce and Murray joined in, too. We had a snowball fight, which was quite fun. It was all fun and games until suddenly, the four gaurds charged at us, punching us in the face and kicking us right in the ankles, and giving us black eyes. One more punch, and we were knocked unconscious. The gaurds then carried us to a Russian prison, threw us inside and locked our jail cell so that we couldn't escape.

ST is part alternate history what with the use of real historical elements like MKUltra and the Cold War.
So The Nina Project could very well be tied to the Soviet Union, since the real Nina Kulagina (Ninel Sergeyevna Kulagina) was in the Red Army from age 14 (1940) and served in WWII which ended in 1945 putting her at age 19 then.
She became a housewife sometime after to which the Soviet studies into her perceived psychic abilities began. The studies gained international notice in the 1960s and were occurring before then.
So that puts them within the 1950s time frame around when Project MKUltra began, meaning the Soviets and the US where both conducting studies in psychic abilities around the same time which ties back into the whole Cold War plot.
As for its influence on pop culture and storytelling, Nina Kulagina's perceived psychic abilities appear to have inspired the 1979 science fiction film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky as noted in the article (warning it includes spoilers from the film): https://www.framerated.co.uk/stalker-1979/
Perhaps this is what Tarkovsky symbolises in that final shot in colour of Stalker’s daughter Monkey (Natasha Abramova), wherein she appears to have telekinetic powers. Apparently based on Soviet scientist Edward Naumov’s film depicting a test of Nina Kulagina’s psychic abilities, Tarkovsky said of this enigmatic scene, “We don’t know ourselves all that well; sometimes we manifest forces that can’t be measured by normal standards. I expect something like that to happen at any time.” Sean Martin suggests that the ‘miracle’ of telekinesis is not the one we should be contemplating. The fact that Stalker’s wife still loves him is the “miracle, especially in a world as bereft of spiritual values as the world of Stalker seems to be.”
The Duffer Brothers being well versed in cinema must have seen Stalker or know of Tarkovsky's films, so for them to be inspired by Stalker and the real history that inspired it seems reasonable.
Here is the footage referenced in the Frame Rated article depicting various tests of Nina Kulagina’s psychic abilities. Make of them what you will.
