I finally found how they might actually be kinda important to the plot. If they didn't find Dustin, Lucas & Max by Lover's Lake, they wouldn't have come to the Wheeler House in time for them to communicate w/ Nancy, Steve, Robin & Eddie & tell them that there is a gate at the Munson Trailer. So they wouldn't have gotten back to the Downside Up.

I’ve been thinking of what must be going through the minds of Chief Powell and Officer Callahan. They had absolutely no clue of what was going on. Starting with the body of Chrissy to the opening of the massive gates. I also wonder why they didn’t agree with Jason about Hellfire being a satanic cult. If they would’ve done a better job at handling Jason then maybe Jason wouldn’t want to be a hero because he also didn’t have any idea that he’s messing around with Vecna. I hope the chief and officer survived the earthquake.
