Because he’s a good person

He saw her like Chrissy at the moment

He had a hero complex

He just wanted to get Lucas

He simply didn’t want an innocent to die

The reason why he tried to save Max because he saw what happened to Patrick and he knew that Chrissy was killed, so maybe he didn't wanted the same thing happened to Max

Even though he broke her Walkman that got her injured and killed
