“Good morning everyone!” said Will, coming into the living room.
“Good morning, Will,” said Mike and Joyce. Hopper was sleeping, Murray was drinking Stolichnaya, and Lucas, Max and Erica were playing Uno. Eleven was eating Eggo waffles and Dustin was right outside the door. Will sat down at the breakfast table, a plate of pancakes awaiting him.
Joyce walked over to Hopper. She shook his shoulder. “Hopper, wake up! It’s 10 a.m.!”
Hopper woke up, his eyebrows raised. He groaned and then got up from the couch. Then he surveyed the room. “What’s the commie nerd looking for outside the window?” asked Hopper.
Joyce rolled her eyes. “His name is Dustin, and he’s waiting for Suzie.”
“Who?”
“His girlfriend!” “Oh, Phoebe Cates.” Then Hopper went and sat next to Murray, and raised his hand out. Murray started pouring some vodka into a glass for him. Suddenly, Murray stopped; he remembered something. “Jim, come with me,” he said.
“What is it?” asked Hopper.
Murray looked at Joyce, and then back to Hopper. “You know… that…”
Then Hopper sat up straight. “Oh… Oh, yeah, right…”
“What?” asked Joyce.
“Um… I… We have some work to do with Flo. At the station.”
“What work do you have there?” she asked Murray, suspicious.
“Well it’s time I set Powell and Callahan straight for ridiculing my accurate theories for so long, dontcha think?” asked Murray.
“Okay…”
“Let’s go, Jim.” Hopper and Murray walked out of the house.
“Bye!” said Joyce.
“Where are they going?” asked Jonathan.
Joyce looked at him and smiled. “To the station. And why aren’t you ready yet?”
“The alarm wasn’t working, Steve woke me up.”
“Glad you two are getting along!”
Murray dragged Hopper to the backyard. He pulled out a small, velvet-coated box.
“So, uh, what’s your genius scheme Murray?” asked Hopper.
Murray explained his plan to Hopper. “Sounds good?”
“Yeah, alright, but who’ll look after the kids?”
“I’ll have Karen pick them up.
“Got it.” Hopper looked to the ground, butterflies in his stomach.
Murray laughed. “You nervous?”
“Well…”
“Don’t worry, the plan is completely foolproof. Besides, I’ve known it since ‘85; you two are a match made in heaven if there ever was one. Even Alexei agreed. May his soul rest in peace. And I told Joyce’s kids everything, they love it.”
“You what?!”
“I told them that you’re proposing.”
“And… they’re okay with it?”
“More than okay. Wait, who’s that?” Murray pointed to a girl with glasses walking in their direction.
“Must be Phoebe Cates.”
“What?!”
“Let’s go, quick.” Hopper pushed Murray into the house. Then he saw Joyce. “Oh no. Quick, upstairs.”
Twenty minutes later, the two men went back outside and then rang the doorbell. Lucas opened the door.
“Hi! Suzie, come!” Suzie Bingham ran up to the door. “Hi, you two must be Hopper and Murray!”
“We’re both enchanted. Excuse me,” said Murray. He ran into the kitchen. “Joyce.”
“Oh hi Murray. Yeah, what is it?”
“I cordially invite you to Enzo’s.”
Joyce stared at Murray for some time, and said. “Yeah… sure. When?”
Two hours later, when all the kids were out of the house, Joyce, Hopper and Murray piled into Hopper’s truck. Hopper tried to get into the driver’s seat, but Murray pushed him out of it. “You two lovebirds are sitting in the back.
The ride to Enzo’s was awkward. No one said a word. Well, no one except Murray. He rambled on and on about how Joyce and Hopper were the best couple he’d ever seen. Finally, when they reached Enzo’s, it was 7:13 p.m.
Murray ran and opened the door for Joyce, and ushered her and Hopper into the restaurant.
“Table for three,” he told the waiter. Three minutes later, the waiter brought them to a table with three chairs. The three sat on the chairs and examined the menu.
“Whatever you want,” said Murray, “It’s all on me.”
“I’ll have fettuccine alfredo and a Caesar salad, please,” said Joyce.
“A bottle of red wine, breadsticks and tomato soup,” commanded Hopper.
“Uh, I’ll have some vodka, thanks,” said Murray.
The waiter nodded his head. “Very we–”
“Hey, uh, Joyce, will you marry me?”
The restaurant fell dead silent. Joyce and Murray both gaped at Hopper while the waiter awkwardly walked away. The other customers looked on in anticipation of some drama.
“Jim! Too fast!” whispered Murray.
But then Joyce smiled. “Of course! I’ll need to ask the boys first but—”
“Already done,” said Murray.
Then Hopper tossed Murray the velvet box. She caught it and opened it. Inside was a large diamond ring.
“Oh… It’s… It’s beautiful!”
“Just like you,” said Hopper.
