I was re-watching S4 today and I came to this realization that maybe Dustin is so close with Steve and then Eddie because he looks up to them as possible father figures. In the show there is never a mention of Dustin's father and Steve and Eddie are older than him, so it could be possible that's why he has such a strong connection with them as in his eyes they represent a type of father figure.
