First, it is doubtful they would have agreed to take her in. Recall Jonathan's remark to Nancy that "your Dad would love that" -- referring to the idea that Jonathan might live in the Wheeler's basement. He would also love taking in El.

Second, Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler don't know her history - and cannot be told her history. Joyce Byers is now the only adult who knows the truth. It might be awkward to try to explain some things to Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler--- El's tattoo on her wrist, her limited vocabulary and strange behaviors - and what happens if /when her powers start to come back?

Third, if Mr. Wheeler even suspects who El is, he may contact the FBI and turn her in -he still thinks she is a Russian spy.

Fourth, Joyce has a relationship with El already. Note that in the episode "The Bath", Joyce bonds with El when they are preparing her for the bath. In the episode "The Gate", El goes to hug Joyce second after hugging Mike. Joyce is the closest thing to a mother that El has ever known.

So, going with the Byers is the best and only option for El.

As much as I love mileven I would have to say no. If she was adopted by the wheelers that be akward on mileven. I'm also sure that Karen and Ted would not be fond of having another child. They already have 3 and they have a strained marriage..

@Averhoes I had forgotten that brief exchange between Jonathan and Nancy. Was it at the end of Season 3? In that case you're probably right that the Wheelers would have outright refused. (Although that being said, Jonathan was in a different position than El, as he still had parents who were alive. They may have been more sympathetic had they known El's situation.)

Do we actually know how much his parents know about El's history? They seem to know about her as his mom was listening to Mike's conversation with El over the telephone. Do they just assume that she's someone he knows from school?

@GoldFanPro Yes, I could see it becoming awkward for the two of them now that they're a couple. Perhaps it would have been more feasible when they were still kids in Season 1 -- after all, Mike initially adopted her into his home, so we know it's worked in the past. Whether it would have been a good long-term solution, though, is debatable, especially since his parents weren't even aware of her presence.

Same with Mileven. Because I shipped them, But Mike did mention in “ The Upside Down”. That his mother will take her in and Eleven won’t be a secret anymore! Is before he shares his first kiss with her, then on the end of season three. Mike knows that he is growing up from a boy to a man! Knows Eleven needs to be with the Byers, because I feel like before Hopper dies and he definitely tells Joyce to be El’s illegal guardian right after he adopted her in the end of season two.

Including otherwise Eleven is better with the Byers since she’s close to Joyce than anyone else! And she will definitely be more closer to Will so he can help her to live a normal life and him getting close El as being his adopted sister, he can tell Eleven about how he meet Mike! Then, how he became part of the Party! And how he got closer to Mike! So Will Byers can help Eleven to learn more about him and the Party then anyone else!

Besides Eleven never meet Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler. Since she dated with Mike in season three and if she lived with the Wheelers, it will definitely be awkward for the Wheelers since Mrs. Wheeler knows that her son Mike is dating and close to Eleven! Let me say, the Byers are a lot better than the Wheelers!

I don’t think el living with mike it would have made sense, but has anyone thought about el’s aunt Becky? She knows about el’s powers and she is a blood relative, and I’m pretty sure she lives in or close to Hawkins. Why didn’t she end up living with her?

^Because she has no relationship to her other than blood. I don't see any child wanting to live with someone just because of shared blood when there are other adults in your life whom you trust and who are willing to take you in.
