Another Fan Theory Of The Secret American

Hi! I just watched Stranger Things 3. I won’t lie, it literally made me cry. It was sooo sad. I can’t wait for Season 4, like everybody else. But let’s just talk about my theory.

I think in the end of 03x08, the secret American is Jim. I’ll tell you why. At the explosion scene, Hopper couldn’t go to the “safe zone”. After the explosion, the bridge was untouched. I think that the Russians kidnapped Jim and they took him to Kamchatka. I don’t understand, why is the upside down is important to the Russians, though.

In my opinion the "American" could also not be him (he could be Dr. Brenner since in S2 we have the doubt that he is alive) , but with this I don't mean that he is obviously dead. So maybe the American is someone else, knowing that with the Duffer brothers you can expect anything... And hopper could have survived in another way

David Harbour has pretty much come out and said that the American is Hopper.

I’m convinced it’s Murray Bauman. I felt there were several hints in season 3. He speaks Russian which if he wasn’t the spy would kind of a happy coincidence for Hopper and Joyce. Being into all his wired conspiracies is kind of the perfect cover for him as a spy but the main things that convinced me were:

1.) The conversation he had with Alexei at the fair about the games being rigged sounded pretty anti-capitalist and anti-America for a guy who’s supposed worried about communists.

2.) when him, Joyce and Hopper were trying to blow up the Russian Starcourt Mall Key machine the password to get the shutdown keys was wrong in my opinion intentionally to keep them from shutting the machine down 3) finally, when they talk about the location of Hawkins being important to opening the gate to the upside down because that’s where was first opened how would the Russians know it was first opened in Hawkins? Most of Hawkins doesn’t even know. The test of the Russian key we saw in season 3 was in June 1984. Then the events of season 2 happened in October of 1984 and Nancy and Jonathan told Murray all about the upside down and everything going on in Hawkins so then Murray relayed the information back to the Russians who were able to build their starcourt mall key that we see during season 3.

Brenner may be working with the Russians, he could very well be the source - in fact, in June 1984, Murray does not know anything about the gate being opened at Hawkins, but the Russians already know something since they are working on opening their own gate (Murray does not learn the truth about the Hawkins experiments until Jonathan and Nancy tell him, in early November,1984).

Does speaking Russian make an American a spy? I speak an American who speaks Russian, am I a spy?

Brenner could be involved if he’s still alive but I’m pretty convinced Murray is a spy. Yes, in June 1984 Murray didn’t know anything about the Gate or the Upsidedown but I’m saying he relayed the information about Hawkins being the LOCATION where the Americans had opened there gate after the events of season 2. And I’m not saying speaking Russian points directly to him being a spy. It’s just speaking Russian in midwestern America isn’t that common especially in the 80’s so I just felt it seemed awfully convenient for Hopper and Joyce and the theory of him being a spy would explain that convenience.

Oh, I just realized my first responses don’t match the initial post. Oops! I don’t think Murray is the American in the Russian cell that was referenced in the end but I do feel like he could be a spy for the Russians. Feel a little dumb now for not fully understand that first post...
